Deadly floods have hit the island of Sumatra

At least 43 people were killed and 17 remain missing in floods and cold lava flows from the Mount Marapi volcano on the island of Sumatra in western Indonesia, according to a new toll reported on Monday (13.05.2024) by the local disaster agency.

"The death toll last night was 37.... But since this morning it increased again, the figure reached 43 (dead)," said Ilham Wahab, an official of the West Sumatra disaster mitigation agency, adding that rescuers were searching for 17 missing people.

The disaster struck at about 22:30 local time (15:30 GMT) on Saturday in West Sumatra island.

Three people are missing in Agam district and 14 in Tanah Datar, the areas worst hit by the floods and home to hundreds of thousands of people, Ilham said.

Torrential rains sent large volcanic rocks and cold lava rolling down one of Indonesia's most active volcanoes on Saturday night, while roads, homes and mosques were flooded.
